Zairyn Radriemir

Background

Stalked by shadows of the past, Zairyn wanders the countryside with no real goal in mind. Abandoned at birth and raised by a small village of Strange Ones that called themselves the Zauate ("Children of the Way" in some ancient tongue), Zairyn has never truly known the comfort of family and friends. Even among other fellow Strange Ones, he found he simply did not fit in. Marked by elongated, pointy ears and an almost supernatural piercing glare, Zairyn easily found himself isolated and alone.

The Zauate never knew peace themselves. Constantly targetted by bandit raids and general human intolerance, they fought to survive and moved their village several times in Zairyn's time with them. It was assumed by moving every couple of years, the amount of hatred against them would never build up to lethal levels. This was a fatal mistake; nearby villages called the Zauate omens of bad luck and heralds of the apocalypse. To silence the disconcerted villagers, the Worend Empire sent soldiers to deal with the Zauate... permaently. Their village was pillaged and burned to the ground by the Empire and any Zauate that resisted them were rounded up and burned to death -- women and children included. Zairyn was only 12 years old and initially fought back the incursion by the Empire. Though he held no great allegience to the Zauate, they were all he knew and he fought desperately to hang on to that thread of familiarity. However, during the fighting, he was knocked unconscious and buried in the bodies of his adopted kinsmen as they fell around him . The bodies of the fallen Zauate were left to rot by the Empire as an example and Zairyn managed to escape after his attackers had finished ransacking the village. Sickened by the grotesque cruelty of the Empire, he swore revenge on them as he limped away from the massacre.

Since then, Zairyn has mostly avoided contact with both civilized humans and other Strange Ones. Though he naturally distrusts most civilized humans, Zairyn holds hatred only for those that affiliate themselves directly with the Worend Empire. Honing his swordsmanship skills for the day he could take revenge on his attackers, Zairyn has roamed from place to place at his own fancy. When he sees something he doesn't like, he intervenes only to satisfy his own ego. Now 30, the day where he exacts revenge draws near and Zairyn lives only for that day.

Hydra Jerky

Since joining up with Aidyn (as well as his two flunkies, Kevkul and Adrek), Zairyn has encountered one of the mythical beasts known as "hydras" and has developed a taste for their flesh. Though he knows not when his journey will end, Zairyn does know where: the end of the Empire. When that task is finally complete, Zairyn has one more goal to accomplish: the creation of a small restaurant specializing in Hydra Jerky!

Though it tastes like rot and is absurdly tough, the exotic food will (maybe) have a very dedicated fan base. Supply remains a bit of a problem, but Zairyn figures if he can take down the Worend Empire, then something like that is of little concern.

Recently, most of the hydra jerky has been confiscated by a random boar in the Doommarch. With nigh but a few pieces left of his beloved creation, Zairyn is eager to find another hydra somewhere in the planes of Exis.

Cover Story

Traveling with a bard, a psychotic mage, and a mindless barbarian has prompted Zairyn to pre-create an established background for the party should they ever be questioned while within the Empire. No fake past would be complete without equally fake names to accompany them, so Zairyn has also penned names for himself and his comrades to use.

Aidyn and Zairyn, known as Faroush Vincetti and Ratzel Fanschmeker III, are half-brother bordersmen writing a book about legends from all over the Worend Empire. Interested in such things, the two have been all over the Empire in their search for lore concerning their beloved country's past.

Halfway into their journey, they encountered a deranged boy wandering the countryside roads. Feeling sympathy for the poor creature, Faroush and Ratzel decided to take the boy along as a pet and named him Viggtu.

Of course, wandering around the empire is dangerous, so they contracted a barbarian from beyond the lands of the Empire to guard them. Named Na'ceroth Rath'elg, he does well enough to defend Faroush and Ratzel as they delve into the rich and complex histories behind Worend.

So far, the only one to hear Zairyn's cover story is "Bear Cheeks" Mond of the Dirty Wolf Tavern in Mercran. He was unfortunately not convinced of the story's legitimacy, and it has forced Zairyn to iron out some of the more minute details.

Travel Log

Days 260-269, Year 437

Begins Zairyn's adventure by meeting Aidyn in the northern deserts. Their subsequent battles with Adrek's minions and their encounter with a ghostly maiden as well as the barbarian hulk Kevkul are chronicled within as the party searches for Aidyn's precious, lost item.

Days 270-276, Year 437

The journey to Mercran, the next stop on Aidyn's places to look, is interrupted by a sudden transportation to the Doommarch. Their attempts at exploration are cut short as they are launched back to the Empire. At Mercran, the party discovers ruins outside the city that are suspicious enough to warrant searching. Within, they encounter legions of orcs and blood-stealing imps.

Notable skills:

Defensive Attack

After seeing his so-called meat shields go down like paper in the wind, Zairyn took it upon himself to adopt a more defensive stance for when things go badly. Perfect for buying time, Zairyn becomes a near impenetrable wall to those foolish enough to attack him. When activated, up to five points can be subtracted from Zairyn's attack bonus and added to parry/dodge.

Cleave

Through repeated mobbing of the party, Zairyn has taken it upon himself to improve his swordsmanship, making each step more efficient and deadly. As such, after a foe is dispatched, Zairyn is able to quickly turn his attention to a nearby foe without missing a beat, hopefully saving the party from yet another mugging.

Shadow's Edge

Since starting their journey, Aidyn and Zairyn have started to become attuned to each other's perils. When Aidyn uses a conviction point, if Zairyn has few points than Aidyn's remaining ones, he gains a convinction point automatically.

The Enemy Revealed

Spending his life tracking down information on the Empire and thinking only of its destruction, Zairyn has developed an almost sixth sense to detect its villainous leaders. He can spend a conviction point to sense the direction of the "Enemy", regardless of his or her distance. This ability lasts for three rounds.
