The Planes of Sepulture

The planes detailed below, and their relationships to one another, make up the known planes of the SepultureCampaignSetting.

Exis

The mundane world, consisting of the Material and Ethereal Planes, is known to most residents as Exis, simply short for Existence. It is the only known plane to be considered truly hospitable.

In everyday use, the term Exis is used to represent the Material Plane, and also the only known continent on which all residents live. When speaking of planes, Exis is used to speak of both the Material and Ethereal Planes, which are tightly knit in their composure. Finally, Exis is used in a more literal sense -- existence -- to represent the entire universe, including all known planes. This final usage is fairly antiquated, and has grown out of use as planar knowledge becomes established.

Planar components

The Material Plane

The Material Plane of Exis, or the Material Plane for short, is the "main" plane as regarded by most, owing to its nexus-like nature. All of the other known planes connect to it in some fashion.

The most notable of these connections is that with Sepulture, which runs parallel to Exis, and actually connects coterminously at one point.

The Ethereal Plane

Closely parallel to the Material Plane is the Ethereal Plane. The Ethereal Plane of Exis is an incorporeal echo of the Material Plane, and physical changes on the Material are immediately present in the Ethereal. Native residents to the Ethereal Plane have yet to be discovered, leaving the plane to be inhabited by (sometimes lost) spellcasters and the dead who have returned to Exis (being unable to return to the Material Plane properly).

Planar connections

Exis has the following planar connections:

Planar travel

There are a variety of ways to travel among the planes from Exis:

Sepulture

Sepulture, the resting place for Exis' deceased, is a ghost-like twisted mirror of Exis, believed to stretch for infinite distance, perhaps beyond any known or presumed borders of Exis. The dead, as part of their transference to Sepulture, have the ability to alter the plane as if they were physically interacting with it, although they themselves are permanently incorporeal. The plane has an accelerated aging influence on living visitors, who can reach the plane both via magical and mundane travel.

Planar connections

Sepulture has the following planar connections:

Note: as Sepulture itself is corporeal, other corporeal creatures may come and go freely, but it is not known what happens to an incorporeal Sepulture native when they travel to an area of Doommarch.

Planar travel

For the dead, travel to Exis is restricted and unfulfilling. Nevertheless, there are a couple methods of travel between the two planes:

Doommarch

The Doommarch is either one contiguous plane or a number of smaller planes that occasionally manifest on Exis and Sepulture, either temporarily or permanently, generally dumping foul creatures onto the plane and causing massive destruction to the surrounding area. Little else is known about Doommarch, and few are daring or mad enough to try traveling to its plane(s).

Planar connections

Pockets of Doommarch have the following planar connections:

  • Irregular physical connection between manifested Doommarch and Exis and/or Sepulture
  • If there are any magical connections to/from Doommarch, they are not known in Exis

Planar travel

Creatures may freely travel through mundane methods between the two planes when Doommarch has manifested on Exis or Sepulture, and this has been cause for much destruction on Exis, as fearsome and desperate creatures have poured out of the plane to wreck untold havoc and destruction. Exis natives in the area that have not been caught in the displacement are wise to flee, and few have been foolish enough to enter Doommarch willingly. Their fates are unknown if the plane were to move on, potentially trapping would-be explorers for the rest of their lives.

No magical means of travel to or, presumably, from Doommarch have been discovered.
